What is a CBD oil

If you reside in the US, you must have seen as CBD oil is sold in thousands of places and in about a dozen forms. Today, you can vape CBD oil, eat it, drink it, rub into skin or apply as a spray, put under a tongue to wait until it dissolves, and to add it to your foods and beverages. Even owners of pets give CBD oil to some extent to their four-paw friends to help with insomnia, pains, and some other states.

But not every user of this substance knows what it is, its pros and cons, and how to use it properly. We will cover those questions in this article, as well as tell about the legality of some methods of uses and sales on different territories of the world.

CBD oil is the chemical substance that is in the species of cannabis-derived substances. Today, over 100 substances contained in cannabis are known. CBD oil, together with THC, are the two, which most often meet in cannabis plants, with a total volume of nearly or over 50% of the entire chemical content of plants.

However, as there are several different species of cannabis in nature, it must be mentioned that THC (the substance that causes ‘high’) is derived from one species, while CBD oil is taken from Cannabis Sativa L., another subspecies. After it is cropped, the CBD substance gets purified and the end form of it is produced. Currently, there are only two end forms of CBD known, which are then added to the vastness of all existing products on the market: that’s an oil and isolate.

In isolate, the CBD content is 99.8% or higher. In CBD oil, the CBD content may vary from 20% to 50% (the higher-end contents are usually received when CBD oil is additionally mixed with CBD isolate, which makes such product cost higher yet obtain much higher efficacy).

Also, from the same plant, Cannabis Sativa L., another oil is extracted – a hemp oil (as the people’s name for Cannabis Sativa L. is hemp). While CBD oil is extracted from stems, leaves, and flowers of a plant through the process of chemical transformation (completely safe for the health of consumers, though), hemp oil is extracted by cold pressing of hemp seeds. Hemp oil nearly does not contain CBD and may contain only trace volumes of THC (seeds of hemp naturally don’t contain THC at all but it can come into the product as the result of unintentional contact with THC-containing substances anywhere during the production cycle). Also, these two oils differ in methods of uses: while CBD oil is used as a food additive, to fight pain, insomnia, anxiety, and some other states in human (about which we are talking later), hemp oil is actively used in cosmetology, beauty procedures, and food production, as it is rich with nutrients, micro-, and macro-elements, proteins, and fatty acids (Omega-3, 6, 9, which are highly needed by a human body for the normal functioning). This makes hemp oil not to differ too much from other nutritious oils used for cooking. The only thing is that hemp oil is not good for baking and frying, as it has an extremely low point of smoking, which makes it cloudy smoke on a regular frying pan. It is used in salads and other cold foods.

Why are we explaining in such details the CBD oil and hemp oil discrepancies? For your own goodness. That is, when you see some product saying it contains ‘CBD oil’ but it costs too low compared to market competitors of the same kind, it is highly likely that a manufacturer is cheating on his consumers, replacing CBD oil with much cheaper hemp oil, which acts differently, not giving any of those actions as CBD oil gives. It won’t hurt your body (maybe, even, vice versa, will be more useful in some cases than CBD oil) but it’s the same thing that you are deceived in a drugstore when you have asked them for Zolpidem for sleep while they have given you Aspirin for headache. Not the same thing, right? To avoid being fooled – always check on marketing prices before being allured by the too lucrative price of some new product.

Is CBD oil legal?

In Cannabis Sativa L., the content of CBD oil is significantly higher than of THC and is usually around 30%-40% of all oils and liquids brought together, while THC is 0.3% of the dry mass or less. Actually, it must contain 0.3% or less of THC to make it a legal plant, as a higher content of it can be not allowed to cultivate in some states or the content of THC in the end product that comes to a consumer must not exceed 0.3% in order not to violate the legality issues.

The legality of CBD oil was given in late 2018 after Congress of the United States of America passed the Farming bill (which is reconsidered on a regular basis). Around a year now, every state in the US has decriminalized and allowed cultivation and sales of CBD oil with the content of THC on it not bigger than 0.3% of the dry mass. It is believed that such a small content makes no harm to a human body. However, in order to gain more audience, you might have seen CBD-containing products, which explicitly say that they have 0% of THC (they are being purified additionally), to cover a wider range of the audience. It is so because some people may undergo periodical drug tests on their workplaces and even such a small amount of THC may give the incorrect ‘positive’ result. However, some people report that CBD may also become a reason for receiving a drug-positive result, even though most drug tests are tuned to find only THC, not CBD. If you have such a job with periodic drug tests, it is advisable to refrain from using CBD at all – in any of its forms (especially if your job is of high importance to you). It is known today that the half-life of CBD is around 4-5 days, during which it may be chemically found in the body’s tissues and liquids (the term may be longer if a person has low function of liver and kidneys, have taken big doses of CBD or/and has been doing it on a regular basis during a long time, or have taken this substance together with some power-enhancing modulators – foods, drugs, beverages). After the half-life term is over, it should be untraceable in the body, while still being present there up to 4 weeks from the moment of intake.

When it comes to consumption of the CBD substance inside the US borders, the law does not forbid using it. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the US has not allowed it to be used only in several cases:

  • It may not be added to human foods and drinks
  • It should not be positioned as a food supplement in advertising
  • Manufacturers should not tell about its unambiguous efficacy for humans or pets.

As we all may see, paragraph one is not followed. Either the FDA has not enough power and resources to forbid CBD oil to be added to foods and beverages, or this agency simply closes eyes on such a violation – but the fact stays the fact: you can buy a dozen of different types of foods with CBD in your nearest store (and even more of them online).

But if the strong control is not organized inside the US, things get tougher on the borders. It is quite hard to export CBD oil, which was manufactured in the US, to any other country even if this country’s legislation does not forbid CBD substance for sale and consumption. We have seen many users and manufacturers complain that the customs office confiscates CBD-containing products on the border even if they go to such countries as Canada, where they also may be consumed legally. In addition, some US manufacturers deliver the products being bought from their online stores only to mainland states and do not deliver to Alaska, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, or far sea territories.

Globally, in the world, there are around 90 countries from those 200+, which Wikipedia considers independent governments, which have legalized, decriminalized, allowed, or factually don’t penalize for the use of CBD and/or THC. Roughly in half, it is legal or tolerated to make/consume CBD, while in another half, the same is for THC or THC + CBD. So if you are pondering about taking your CBD-containing food or health remedy to an abroad vacation with you, unless you are 100% positively sure that all citizens and foreigners of this particular country you’re going to are allowed to possess, move through the state border, and consume CBD for their own purposes, please, leave the pack with CBD back at home so not to complicate your vacation – not to yourself, not to your family.

Top 5 benefits and uses of CBD oil

The things that make CBD oil so popular in the life of every American are its health benefits. But let’s make it straight now – the FDA did not directly say that CBD brings any good or bad. The agency doesn’t say that this chemical substance has any convincing and enough proves based on a reliable number of pieces of research that CBD has any good for the body of a human or a pet, the same as it does not rely on such a number of evidential pieces about its harm.

Up to this day, the FDA only approved 2 medical drugs, one of which is Epidiolex (which is used to treat seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome or Dravet syndrome in patients 2 years of age and older). The agency will wait until the studies amass to make sure to rely on them to make any further conclusions. And, as the FDA says, it encourages and will encourage such studies.

So, below, we are giving the health benefits of CBD oil that are based on those studies that are currently available, though the submitted information is not an officially approved and may come in complete opposition to what certified doctors say.

And, before jumping to consideration of the top-5 benefits for the health of the intake of CBD oil, we have to warn you about the following. In the light of the latest news about many deaths and deteriorations of health in vape smokers (vapers) in the US and across the globe, we have to specifically warn you that the CBD oil for vaping is not the oil (despite what it says on the label – the label is just for consumer convenience)! This is a water-based substance with the dissolved CBD isolate in it, without any % of oil. Smoking and vaping oil in any of its physical conditions lead to a specific type of ailment of lungs of humans and pets, known to occur because of clogging with oil that sticks to walls of lungs and prevents a person from receiving air from the environment. A person suffocates and may die, while his or her lungs irreversibly deteriorate because of inhaling of vapor of oil. DO NOT USE OIL for vaping – not based on CBD, not based on anything on PG/VG oily liquids, use only water-based solutions with zero content of oil! Also, we have heard the information that PG/VG substances may have some effect on clogging lungs of vapers, too, so, from the point of view of correct consumption of CBD, we shall advise you not to add anything into CBD oil for vaping already prepared for use, which you buy online or offline (especially avoid PG and VG), as it is unknown how bad for human health such additives really are. As with the CBD itself, the humanity needs far bigger studies on the action of PG, VG, and other vaping substances to make sure that they are safe (or to tell it is not so).

Different types of pain are treated with CBD oil: arthritis, arthrosis, headache, stomach, in bones, in soft tissues, in ligaments, in joints, and ones connected to various diseases and sicknesses in a human body. People taking part in studies reveal different levels of lowering their pain – from mild to significant. Nearly in all undertaken studies with a control group or placebo, people taking CBD mentioned the effect higher than the one with placebo or statistically distinguishable from it.

Epilepsy and seizures

CBD is known for a possibility to smoothen the bodily reactions (which is why many people who take CBD say that they feel as if ‘melted’ into the chair they’re sitting on or a bed they are lying on). Due to this, CBD is able to seize epilepsy and seizures, completely or partially removing them. In an already mentioned Epidiolex, the efficacy in withdrawing seizures in patients was up to 100% during the clinical tests. They all have been going without those adverse effects, which take place in chemically produced drugs (this was the main reason why this medicine was approved by the FDA).

Depression & anxiety

In one of the studies conducted in Brazil, CBD taken in a dose of 300 mg 90 minutes before some important event in a day or simply on a daily basis has “significantly” reduced the level of depression & anxiety in the involved patients. Other dosages did not have such an effect, smaller or bigger ones. Today, tens of thousands of people use CBD oil on the daily basis to fight depression & anxiety, feel more relaxed without the feeling of being ‘stoned’ (as it is the case with marijuana), and live a fuller life. It is important because anxiety & depression together give the biggest effect on disability and low level of health in all countries of the world drawn up together.

Skin diseases such as acne

Skin imperfections, wounds, and burns heal up faster because of the consumption of CBD. When CBD is used together with anti-inflammatory, anti-fungi, or anti-bacterial remedies (depending on the type of skin problem a person is having), it shows a bigger effect.

Due to the already mentioned feeling of ‘melting into’, CBD is a powerful relaxant, which makes people sleep better. It acts not only on sleep improvement if a sleep disturbance is a standalone problem but it is also so if this has been caused by different ailments (like rheumatoid arthritis) or diseases (like Parkinson’s).

Side effects of CBD oil

Sure, the things would be too cloudless if CBD didn’t have side effects. They are:

  • tiredness
  • loss or gain of the weight of the body
  • fatigue
  • disturbances in sleep
  • diarrhea
  • appetite swings
  • agitation.

Each of them can be manifested in bigger or smaller degrees, while some of those side effects may not manifest at all. Also, one has to take into account that their combinations are possible and some people did not have any side effects after the intake of CBD.

How to use CBD oil

By now, even before reading this article, you must have known that CBD comes in many forms. Manufacturers produce the following:

  • vapes
  • topicals
  • tinctures
  • sprays
  • tablets
  • powder
  • ointments
  • oil
  • liquids
  • isolate
  • capsules
  • foods and beverages.

Each type of product has different content of CBD – from 0.5% (usually, in snacks) to 99.8% (in isolate). Simply follow the destination of a type of a product that is said on its cover – it couldn’t be simpler.

If you buy a product completely ready to use without any additional transformations, it’s one thing. If you plan to add CBD oil to some food or drink that you’re cooking – that’s another thing. Why? Because in a pre-manufactured product, the dosage is strictly defined and known. When you add something ‘on an eye’, you may be mistaken in a dose. That is, one general precaution: do not add CBD oil or isolate into someone other’s food to avoid negative health consequences for such a person and connected legal outcome for you.

Also, we recommend you not to increase the dosage of intake prescribed by the manufacturer. If there is no dose given, start with the lowest possible (which is usually 10 mg of CBD per one intake).

How long does it take for CBD oil to work?

In addition to the dose, a massive number of other parameters affect the answer to how fast CBD oil starts to work. These are:

  • your body complexion (weight, the health of the liver, general health)
  • habits
  • history of intake of CBD by you
  • your personal bodily reaction on the substance
  • whether you take CBD alone or together with any other substances (drugs, meds, foods, and beverages), which may increase or decrease its action
  • the method of intake of CBD, which affects the speed of absorption by the body.

Normally, the effect starts manifesting itself in 10-20 minutes but some people may feel it starting in 30-60 minutes or not starting at all. The half-life of the substance takes 4-5 days.

Where to buy CBD oil safely?

If you live in the US, you can buy it legally in every state online and offline. If you do not live in the US and want to order the delivery to your country from the US on the Internet, it usually won’t be delivered to you.

Thousands of online and offline locations are at your service. The only thing that differs significantly between the two spheres of procurement is the price. Depending on the city and state, the price may vary up to 2 times. The highest prices are seen in Utah, Indiana, and New Jersey, while the lowest prices are seen in California, Florida, and Massachusetts.

Some best online stores include those addresses:
